As of Sunday evening, China's total box office revenue for all of 2026 had surpassed 23.1 billion yuan (about $3.41 billion). The summer season has now recorded 23 consecutive days with daily box office receipts exceeding 100 million yuan, signaling sustained upward momentum in the market.
According to box office tracker Beacon, summer box office revenue had topped 7.4 billion yuan (about $1.1 billion) as of Monday morning.
Domestic films have led the way this year, taking the top three spots on the annual box office chart and the top two positions during the summer season.
Leading the summer season is the comedy animated film "The Eight Immortals!" Inspired by one of China's most beloved folk legends and infused with Eastern aesthetics, the film has been confirmed for a global release beginning August 13.
Following close behind is the sports comedy "Kung Fu Women's Football." A spiritual successor to the 2001 classic "Shaolin Soccer," the film blends wildly imaginative storytelling with the intense competition of women's football.
Newly released films have drawn large numbers of student viewers. In Rizhao, a coastal city in eastern China's Shandong Province, one cinema held screenings specifically for students, attracting more than 200 young people.
"I'm on vacation now, so I'll go watch some of the movies I like to make my summer break more fulfilling," one student said.
To cater to student and family audiences during the summer break, cinemas are also adjusting their scheduling and services.
"We're adjusting our screening schedules in real time to ensure demand is met across all film genres," a cinema staff member said. "We've also extended prime-time screenings and rolled out student discounts to boost attendance, attract more families and drive summer box office."
Beyond multiplex cinemas, cities and towns across the country are hosting film tours and community screenings, bringing quality films into neighborhoods and enriching daily life throughout the summer.
