Hong Kong Star Patrick Tse Dies at 89, Oldest Winner of Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor
Legendary Hong Kong actor Patrick Tse, father of Nicholas Tse and the oldest-ever winner of the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor, has died at the age of 89 after a career spanning more than seven decades.

HONG KONG (CNA) — According to reports, renowned Hong Kong actor Patrick Tse died on Sunday at the age of 89. A star since the 1950s, Tse cultivated a debonair, charming image throughout his life. He was married twice — first to Taiwanese star Chen Chen and later to Hong Kong actress Deborah Dik. His son is Nicholas Tse and his daughter is Jennifer Tse.
According to local media and posts on the mainland Chinese platform Weibo, Nicholas Tse wrote a tribute to his father on Weibo, saying "Father has left us," and praising Patrick Tse for devoting his life to film, television and entertainment.
Reports say Nicholas Tse is hurrying back to Hong Kong to handle his father's funeral arrangements.
Online records show that Patrick Tse was born in 1936 with the original name Tse Ka-yuk. Because he was the fourth child in his family, and because he played the character Law Sze-hoi in the drama series "The Shell Game," he became widely known as "Fourth Brother," as well as "Old Fourth" and "Tse Old Fourth."
Tse entered show business in the 1950s and rose to fame after appearing in numerous films. Hong Kong films at the time were shot in black and white, and Tse's dashing image made him a leading man of his generation in movies such as "The Great Devotion."
In the 1960s, Tse and other performers formed the "Silver Rat Team," which won huge popularity across both Hong Kong and Taiwan. In 1967 he founded the "Tse Brothers Film Company" and directed his first film, "The Narrow Staircase."
From the 1970s onward, Tse worked as a freelance actor and starred in many films in both Hong Kong and Taiwan. In 1978, he was invited to join TVB to film television dramas, including "The Shell Game" and "The Fatal Irony."
In 2022, Tse won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film "Time," becoming the oldest actor ever to win the award.
