Russian Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova recently said Russia plans to expand the scope of its cooperation with China in the film sector.

In an interview during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Lyubimova said China's film industry and film economy are among the world's leaders. Chinese filmmakers, she noted, value not only a film's commercial performance but also the values, morals and traditions that a screenplay can embody. At the current stage, she said, Russian filmmakers are working to develop the Chinese market. In this process, box office is not the primary consideration—for Russian films, simply entering the Chinese market already signifies success.

Lyubimova also stressed the importance of Russia-China co-productions. She said the two countries have signed relevant cooperation documents, that their co-produced film "Red Silk" has already been released, and that filming of the sequel "Black Silk" has been completed within Russia.

Lyubimova added that audiences in both Russia and China enjoy comedy, and that screenwriters from the two countries should learn each other's styles of humor. They should form joint teams and create works aimed at audiences of different ages on both sides, she said.
