Taiwanese Film 'Left-Handed Girl' Wins Best Film at Rome Film Festival

Taiwan's film industry has cause to celebrate, as "Left-Handed Girl" won the Best Film award at the Rome Film Festival. Set against the lively backdrop of Taipei's night markets, the film offers a delicate portrait of the emotional bonds among a mother and her two daughters. Director Shih-Ching Tsou delivered her acceptance speech via a recorded video, thanking the jury for their recognition.
"This film began as a very personal story, and it took more than 20 years to bring it to the big screen," said director Shih-Ching Tsou. "To receive this award in Rome, a city that celebrates film and humanity, holds extraordinary meaning for me."
The film depicts a single mother who relocates to Taipei with her two daughters and makes a living running a stall at a night market, confronting real-world challenges and pressures along the way. In besting a field of strong competitors, director Shih-Ching Tsou thanked not only the jury for their recognition but also her Taiwanese collaborators and international production partners for their confidence in the story. "Left-Handed Girl" will also represent Taiwan in the race for the 2026 Academy Awards, aiming to show the world the warmth and power of Taiwanese cinema.
