Following last week's North American box-office triumph of "Backrooms," a film adapted from a 4chan post, the region's film scene has once again witnessed a box-office miracle from an independent web-born property. "The Amazing Digital Circus: Final Chapter," a big-screen adaptation of the wildly popular YouTube animated series, opened simultaneously worldwide on Thursday. In North America, it stormed 2,221 theaters to gross $8.34 million, claiming the top spot for Thursday's single-day box office, while its opening weekend racked up nearly $20 million — stunning Hollywood insiders.

The film was originally slated for just a four-day run across 2,000 North American theaters, but in response to overwhelming demand from fans worldwide, it ultimately became a "globally synchronized celebration" with a two-week limited run. Industry experts note that these quirky, offbeat independent works are successfully drawing young viewers (Gen Z) back into cinemas. What sets "The Amazing Digital Circus" apart is the way the mental breakdowns of its core characters — Pomni, Kinger and Jax — perfectly mirror the psychological state of today's young people, demonstrating remarkably high fan loyalty. This may signal that the film box-office market has entered an entirely new era.

Buoyed by the enthusiastic support of Taiwanese fans and the backing of theater owners across the island, "The Amazing Digital Circus: Final Chapter" also opened strongly in Taiwan this weekend. Theaters nationwide saw packed screenings, with tickets and merchandise selling out. The film grossed more than NT$8 million in its opening weekend, taking the top spot among new releases in Taiwan as well as the highest occupancy rate.

Beyond the strong box office, the creative fan-support activities organized by Taiwanese moviegoers have been a feast for the eyes. To reward fans, theaters are actively preparing exclusive merchandise for the second week. The second-week bundle will include premium stickers and two collectible character ticket cards (seven designs in all, including one hidden variant), which is expected to reignite the collecting frenzy among fans.

"The Amazing Digital Circus" follows a group of unlucky humans who don a mysterious VR device, only to find their consciousness trapped inside a retro-styled virtual circus. Having lost all memory of reality, they are forced by the deranged AI host Caine to repeat meaningless, absurd adventures. In the theatrical "Final Chapter," the central figure Caine suddenly vanishes, plunging the circus into darkness, and the characters are forced to confront their past mistakes and traumas. As a suffocating eternity draws near, they will uncover the truth about the Digital Circus and its history, revealing the deepest secrets long concealed beneath its cheerful facade.

The film is not only beloved by teenagers — its premise of characters held hostage by digital screens, with reason snapping and souls dying, has struck a powerful chord with countless adult office workers worldwide. It has been described as "the perfect metaphor for modern people who go to work every day, are tormented by their jobs, yet cannot escape." Where exactly did this eerie virtual world come from? Can the protagonist Pomni and her companions find an exit back to reality? These long-standing mysteries will all be revealed at once on cinemas' premium big screens and through their immersive sound systems.
