Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-wai has officially confirmed his return to feature filmmaking after a hiatus of more than ten years. The project, currently under the working title 'Shanghai Nights', will reportedly star his frequent collaborator Tony Leung Chiu-wai.
Set against the backdrop of 1990s Shanghai, a period of rapid economic growth and cultural transformation, the film is said to explore themes of nostalgia, fleeting romance, and the passage of time—hallmarks of Wong's cinematic universe. Production is slated to begin this autumn, with cinematographer Christopher Doyle heavily rumored to be rejoining the team.
'This is a story I have wanted to tell for a very long time,' Wong said in a brief statement released through his production company, Jet Tone Films. Fans around the globe are already eagerly anticipating what promises to be another visually stunning and emotionally resonant masterpiece.
