"Colony" has been racking up good news at the South Korean box office, reaching 1 million, 2 million and 3 million admissions faster than any other film this year. After holding the No. 1 spot for 11 straight days, it has now drawn 3.47 million admissions and grossed 37.4 billion Korean won (about NT$770 million), already breaking even. It is poised to cross the 4-million-admission mark this week.
The main cast and director have been diligently making the rounds at cinema events. At one screening, Koo Kyo-hwan suddenly "summoned" the film's zombie "companions" to storm into the theater, sending audience members into screams. Co-stars Jun Ji-hyun and Shin Hyun-been were startled as well, with only Ji Chang-wook remaining completely calm. Jun, for her part, seemed to revive her superstar persona "Cheon Song-yi" from "My Love from the Star," puffing out her cheeks and engaging in all sorts of playful interactions — hardly looking like a mother of two.
Playing a building security guard, Ji Chang-wook worked with director Yeon Sang-ho for the first time. "When I first received director Yeon Sang-ho's invitation, I was thrilled, thinking I could finally enter the universe of the director's work," he said. He admitted: "Director Yeon Sang-ho's directing approach on set is very precise. At first it felt unfamiliar, and I felt like there wasn't much room for me to do my own thing, so I was a bit flustered and scared. But once I understood that this was simply the director's directing style, I actually became very comfortable and wanted to properly deliver the kind of performance the director was looking for!"
The film's story centers on a mysterious mass-infection incident that breaks out in a skyscraper in central Seoul. The infected fully evolve: at first they can only crawl like beasts, but later they begin walking on two legs, can distinguish humans, and band together to attack survivors. Jun Ji-hyun plays bioengineer Kwon Se-jung, who enters the infected building after being referred for the job by her ex-husband. Ji Chang-wook and Kim Sin-rok play a brother and sister, with the brother carrying his disabled sister on his back as they flee. Koo Kyo-hwan plays genius biologist Seo Yeong-cheol, who claims to have injected himself with a vaccine and heads to the rooftop where the rescue team is stationed — only to use the infected to block the survivors' escape route, sending the situation spiraling out of control.
